A relaxed guide for natural, timeless family photos
Your family photo shoot should feel relaxed, fun and completely you. The right outfits can make such a difference to how your images look and feel — helping everything come together beautifully without looking too “matchy” or overstyled.
At Devonshire Photographic my style is all about natural, relaxed storytelling and capturing genuine family moments outdoors or at home. That means the best outfits are usually the ones that feel comfortable, effortless and timeless.
Start with Neutrals & Soft Tones
Soft earthy colours photograph beautifully outdoors and keep the focus on your family connection rather than bright clothing.
Think:
- Creams
- Beige
- Oatmeal
- Soft browns
- Sage green
- Dusty blue
- Rust
- Soft pinks
- Denim tones
These colours work perfectly with my relaxed lifestyle photography style and suit woodland, park and countryside locations beautifully.
Coordinate — Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans!
Instead, choose colours that complement each other.
A good tip is to pick 3–4 tones and mix them across the family.
For example:
- Mum in cream knitwear
- Dad in soft blue
- Kids in beige and sage
This keeps the images natural and visually balanced.
Avoid Large Logos & Busy Patterns
Big logos, neon colours and busy prints can distract from the emotion in your images.
Simple textures work much better:
- Knits
- Linen
- Denim
- Cotton dresses
- Layered outfits
Texture adds depth to photos without overpowering them.
Dress for Comfort
Especially for little ones!
If children feel uncomfortable in their clothes, it often shows in photos. Choose outfits they can move, run and cuddle in comfortably — because my sessions are very relaxed and often involve exploring, playing and lots of movement.

What Photographs Beautifully for Kids
For children especially, timeless always wins.
I always recommend:
- Dungarees
- Simple dresses
- Knit jumpers
- Neutral leggings or shorts
- Barefoot for younger children where possible
The simpler the outfit, the more attention stays on those gorgeous expressions and family moments.
Most Importantly… Be Yourselves
The best family photographs aren’t about perfect outfits.
They’re about:
-
giggles
-
cuddles
-
muddy boots
-
wind in your hair
-
children being children
Choose outfits that feel like you and your images will feel timeless for years to come.
